The dominant type of housing in Rwanda is isolated residence which comprises some 63.6% of all the dwelling units in the country. The new type of agglomerations (umudugudu) which is being introduced since the 1990s house about 19.3% of the households. However, this type of housing is more predominant in some Provinces than in others, particularly in the Provinces of Kibungo (91.4%), Umutara (46.3%) and Ruhengeri (44.1%).

Spontaneous housing (utujagari) appears to be very common in Kigali City where it lodges some 59.6% of all the households.
