In general most dwelling units in Rwanda are either roofed with zinc (43.4%) or with tiles (39.6%). A significant proportion of the dwelling units is still being roofed with grass (11.5%) especially in the Provinces of Umutara (30,2%), Cyangugu (16,5%), Byumba (16,3%), Kibungo (15,3%) and Butare (14,8%).
There appears to have been some improvement in the quality of roofing for dwelling units in Rwanda since 1991. The number of roofs covered by grass (thatched roofs) has diminished significantly.
