The three main sources of water supply for the dwelling units in Rwanda are protected wells or springs (43.5%), pipe-borne water (23.7%) and unprotected wells or springs (15.8%). Some 64.2% of the dwelling units in Kigali City have access to pipe-borne water and another 16.4% to water from protected wells. Provinces with little access to pipe-borne water (Gitarama, Butare, Kibuye, Byumba, Gikongoro) compensate for this by having greater access to water from protected springs or wells. It is noteworthy that a significant proportion of households in Rwanda still depend on water from lakes, streams and other surface water sources (8.5%). This is quite common in the Provinces of Kigali Ngali (18.5%), Kibungo (15.5%) and Umutara (11.5%).
