Over the entire country, the main sources of energy for lighting are the lampion (64.0%), wood (17.5%) and the kerosene lamp (10.2%), in that order. In Kigali City, some 36.6% of the households use electricity, 29.8% use kerosene lamps and 26.0% use the lampion. Wood is still used for lighting by a significant proportion of households in the Provinces of Gikongoro (42.8%), Kibuye (38.6%), Gisenyi (36.6%), Ruhengeri (21.2%), Butare (20.7%) and Cyangugu (19.4%).
